Income Tax Return Filing Due Date Extended for FY 2024–25: All You Need to Know
In a major relief to taxpayers, professionals, and businesses, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Financial Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26). This move is aimed at addressing concerns related to system readiness, document availability, and easing compliance pressures.

Reasons for Extension

The extension follows feedback from industry bodies, tax practitioners, and taxpayers. Some of the reasons cited include:

1. Delay in Issuance of ITR Utilities

Although ITR forms were notified in April 2025, the corresponding Java/JSON utility tools faced delays and versioning issues, causing challenges in seamless data preparation and validation.

2. Form 16 and 16A Delays

Many employers are expected to issue Form 16 (TDS Certificate for salaried employees) only by mid-to-late June, making it difficult to file returns accurately in July.

3. Portal Glitches and Technical Slowdowns

Past experiences with the income tax e-filing portal have shown that the system experiences heavy loads and outages during peak deadlines.

4. AIS/TIS Reconciliation Challenges

More taxpayers are now required to cross-verify data in Annual Information Statements (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summaries (TIS)—an added layer of complexity.

Implications for Taxpayers

While the extension is welcome, it should be used wisely. Here's what you should be doing:

Salaried Individuals

  • Collect Form 16 from your employer
  • Match TDS and income data with AIS and Form 26AS
  • Use ReduceTax.in's smart filing platform for error-free filing

Business Owners and Freelancers

  • Begin tallying your income, expenses, and deductions
  • Don't delay tax computation—only submission date is extended
  • If audit is applicable, coordinate with your CA now

Consequences of Missing Even the Extended Deadline

Even though the date has been extended, failure to file on time after the new deadline may lead to:

Penalty Type Applicable Section Amount/Implication
Late Filing Fees 234F ₹1,000–₹5,000
Interest on Tax Due 234A/B/C 1% per month from original due date
Loss of Set-Off Rights — Business & capital losses can't be carried forward
Higher Scrutiny Risk — Delayed filings draw higher scrutiny
